Silent Reading

Kym reminded me today was Silent Poetry Reading Day, which got me to thinking about the various poets I enjoy reading and what I would like you to silently read to yourself. It could have been Mary Oliver, Billy Collins, Wendell Barry or Edna St. Vincent Millay. It could also have been William Carlos Williams, or Shakespeare, for that matter. But, I decided on one of my very favorites and one I can count on is one of your favorites, too, Emily Dickinson.

How happy is the little stone
That rambles in the road alone,
And doesn't care about careers,
And exigencies never fears;
Whose coat of elemental brown
A passing universe put on;
And independent as the sun,
Associates or glows alone,
Fulfilling absolute decree
In casual simplicity.

~Emily Dickinson

I love Emily Dickinson. She is the epitome of simplicity.
Thank you!

This is beautiful... and so true. Thank you for sharing Margene! XO

Wonderful! Thank you for sharing.

My favorite poet. Excellent choice. Her simplicity is anything but simple.

Lovely. Thank you. No matter how many of her poems I read, there always seem to be ones I've not read before - this was one!

Another Emily Dickinson fan weighing in! Her poetry is so accessible and so deep and complex at the same time. Thanks for sharing Simplicity.

Oh, you have struck a cord with Emily Dickinson. Like everyone above, I love her poetry. This is one that I am not familiar with, so thanks for broadening my horizon. Happy Friday, Margene, I hope you have a fabulous weekend.

LOVE! Billy Collins is my latest new-to-me favorite but I do love the classics. I have Emily's Gorgeous Nothings on my coffee table and I want to schedule a day (wish I could manage a week!) to just sit down and savor it.

Emily Dickinson always delivers.

Oh I love it! Sometimes I just don't get poetry, but this is so relatable.

Hello! I found your blog through another blog, My Sister's Knitter. I am writing, because I wanted to say that I love poetry and one of my favorite poems is the one you posted here, Simplicity. I love rocks and this poem speaks to me! I appreciate you posting it.

Your knitting is beautiful!

Thank you.

Emily is wonderful -I have a collection of hers on my shelf :)

Thank you for sharing Emily...t'is a good reminder to stop and take count of the small things in life that give pleasure.

Thank-you Margene! My poetry life is quite limited, I love when it comes my way!
