Flower Friday - A BIG TGIF!
July 06, 2007
Good: Hidcote is a few rows from bind off.
Bad: It was too damn hot on the 4th and yesterday (and will be the rest of the week). There are too many amateurs people in the mountains on summer Holidays. We had breakfast at SF and then left. Later, we had trouble finding a place for dinner...it's as hard to find a restaurant open on the 4th finding one on Christmas.
Ugly: There was a small mountain fire the morning of the 4th that filled the south end of the valley with smoke. (It is now contained.) It was over 100 degrees yesterday and the thought of being in a large outdoor cement square (Gallivan Center), with 10,000 people, was more than we could take...concert time canceled...we're wimps. A quiet evening at home, in the cool and comfy basement, was rather wonderful. I knit rather than spend time with the blog. A freaked out dog and the neighbors fireworks, which went on until the wee hours of morning (1:30am), has made for little sleep in our household the last 3 nights.
The Better: Rachel was my 29,000th commenter and the winner of Iggy Pop. Thank you, everyone for the all lovely comments over the last 3+ years.
The Best: Flower Friday!
Have a mahhhvelous weekend and stay cool! It's a challenge around here...whew!
You are up very early! It is 6:00 a.m. here in Southeast Georgia and your blog said you posted that at 3:51 a.m. Are you really up that early or is the time off?
The temps here are going way up this week too, so I'll be inside enjoying the air conditioning while working on my MS3.
I've enjoyed your blog for a long time but very seldom comment, but, I noticed no-one else had yet so today I'm first to wish you a great day and a wonderful, cool weekend.

Wow, I'm sure it doesn't help you much, but for me (living in mid-60s and 70s temps these days) that cool color of yellow on the lily is just so soothing.....like a lemon ice.

Beautiful lilies! Have a wonderful weekend.

They were talking on the news last night about the record heat out West and Dale and I were thinking of you and Smith. Stay cool!

Beautiful lilies! I hear you about the tourist part. I was just bit*hing about the same thing here yesterday. Our traffic doubles now until foliage is over and town is crawling with people.....sigh.
I saw the temps on the news last night for your area...yikes! Keep that a/c on, a drink in your hand and have a GREAT weekend!

I'm glad you found a way to enjoy the holiday. Congrats on being so close to finishing Hidcote!

Thank you for posting that gorgeous lily!! I needed a new desktop background. :) Makes me smile when I look at it.

It's gonna get toasty here this weekend, too, though not quite like your heat.
Stay cool, Margene!

Wow! I love the photos of your flowers. :) I really like seeing what you come up with every week!

the women in my office turn on their heaters when the AC comes on; life is a puzzle.

Staying inside is the way to go, but only if it's cooler inside than outside. At about 3:00 p.m. our house equlized to the then in-the-shade temp of 89 degrees. However our new air conditioning is in now and seems to work. It was hard to tell since it wasn't turned on until 6:30 p.m. and then had to cool down a house that had gotten up to 89 degrees. So today we will find out if we just wasted a bunch of money, or if we finally have air conditioning.

I can't wait to see the finished Hidcote! Beautiful flowres.
I hope you get some relief from the heat soon. Have a great weekend!

I can top the wimpness factor. I only work 1 block from Gallivan but I went home and retreated to our basement instead of going to the concert.

"Well, at least it's not humid", she says, ducking! Seriously, you haven't lived till you've had a week of your temps with our humidity, but still, I know how bad it is. Stay cool however you can! Beautiful lilies!

Happy Friday to you too! Good luck with the heat!

You're not wimps, just "2 of the 3 Wise Men". Seems like a wonderful alternative to me. After all, you could have CD concerts in that cool basement, complete with knitting! VBG!
Brings back fond memories of retreating to a cool Mid-west basement in the days before central AC. Now we live in sub-tropical Louisiana, with (mandatory) central AC, and no basements. Go figure!

I hear ya about the neighbors' fireworks. ARGH. The kitties have been following me everywhere and are very nervous and snuggly. I can hardly wait until folks exhaust their fireworks supplies. Hope you have a good weekend - stay cool!

Have a good weekend! It's super, crazy hot here too.

You're fighting the heat; we're fighting the rain. Flowers make it all better. That one's a real beauty!

Sounds good to me. I would have made the same choices. Silence and solitude are much underrated blessing in our culture.
I read a book once (well actually I've read a book more than once, but I digress) that counseled the cultivation of "holy leisure," for those are the times when we hear our own voice speak and that of God.
Blessings!

That lily is a BEAUTY.

Fortunately the old dog is going deaf. She used to freak out completely on July 4th thinking it was thunder all evening. The cats are not so fond of the screaming bottle rocket sound either.
Cool basements and AC let us get more knitting and spinning done. What's not to like? Can't wait to see Hidcote! Lovely lily. Have a great weekend!

I hope you catch up on your rest this weekend! When I was a teen, we had a German Shepherd who was deathly afraid of fireworks, and he would routinely break into a closet or two and yank everything down in his quest to hide from the noise. I hope your boy has recovered. Can't wait to see Hidcote! Have a wonderful one.

The weather has pretty much overwhelmed me the past three days; sleep and exercise are both suffering but I have gotten some spinning and knitting done. Here's to a break in the heat wave for your weekend enjoyment!
