Hasta la vista, July. The garden is changing and while we've been harvesting this and that for awhile, there remains an inordinate amount of potential. Smith is working up section for a fall crop of carrots, radishes, beets and lettuce, all lovers of cooler tempts. In the mean time, I'm adopting a chicken.
Meet Millie! She is a Red Island Red Cross (a secret cross!) and she wears a red band to show she's mine. That's George trying to hide behind the tree. If not for George chickens would not have come to our garden. He and Smith built the coop and they keep a constant eye on the creatures.
By adopting Millie I'm not only paying a bit for feed, but I also have the responsibility of making sure the coop has water, feed and anything else needed. It's a blast to sit inside and feed the little hens lettuce, and corn, anything fresh and tasty. They'll take it right out of your hand. While Millie is pet-able, Mox and Max need not worry, as Millie will stay at the coop.
Now, why DID the chicken cross the road?

Welcome, Millie!

Love, love, love. New favorite photo. I hope Millie treats you well -- don't know how it could be otherwise given all the chicken love.

I don't know about the road crossing mystery, but scientists have determined that the egg indeed came first!

No, wait, I think it had to be the chicken.....

You have a chicken! Does she lay eggs? Nothing like fresh fresh fresh eggs.

If the chicken really DID cross the road, obviously it would be to come see you. How fun!

Oh, how wonderful! So much life-loving potential there!!!!!

You are both just too cute - a girl and her chicken. :-) I wish I lived far enough out of town that I could have a chicken or two without also having grousing (pun intended) neighbors. We had chicken wars just a few streets away last summer.

I also love your community garden and wishing I had one as close by!

OMG I'm so jealous! Your community garden has chickens! Our garden has Japanese beetles, not the same thing at all. So jealous!

More fundamental, which came first? The chicken or the egg?
Posted by: Sharon | August 03, 2010 at 09:29 PM
You look so happy in that picture with Millie- I love it! I had a pet chicken as a child and she was very sweet and appreciated the help I gave her and the extra food I gave her because her beak was crooked and the other hens didn't like her much. Anyway, enjoy the hens and look out for the rooster if there is one!
