Where I Do What I Do

Myofficethereceptionarea

Doentthemonkeypawlooklikesitspeekin This is where I make my living.  When you walk into my office (the front office of the business) you'll see me sitting at that old computer monitor slaving away working (I'm trying to get the company to pop for a new flat screen). On the desk is my morning snack (yogurt and fruit) with my Sigg bottle nearby. The best thing about this space is the thermostat control is for my office only and I like it warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter than most people.

The tree behind my desk is not living…it's a living nightmare of dust and cobwebs.  I can't get to it to clean it as it's stuck in a corner blocked by the recycling bin and other big boxes.  The plant in front of my desk is a living, breathing plant called a monkey paw.  It is the only living plant I have been able to keep alive at work or home.  Everyday any water that is left in my Sigg, or anytime the water gets too warm to drink, it is dumped into the planter.  Ms Monkey Paw is very happy with this arrangement and she thrives.

Viewfrommydeskatwork From the desk I can see across the valley to the Oquirrh Mountains, but as you can see it has been rather hazy (heat and pollution created ozone). The view just outside the office door is a little better (but still hazy).  The mountains change as the sun moves across the valley during the daylight hours  The shadows are constantly changing. It's a dynamic and sometimes dramatic view and wonderful to see in all seasons.

If you could hear what's happening in my office you'd hear KCRL streaming live (or my own music mix) playing softly in the background, the noise from the agents who reside down the hall (do they need to speak so loudly?) and the occasional sound of a ringing phone.  All in all it's a quite spot, a fun place to work and best of all, it's close to where I live

L is for where I make my living.

Your "living" plant in spanish is called "Adam's rib", what a different name ;)

Awww - "Take Your Readers To Work Day" - what novel concept. I really loved seeing your life. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was for the Letter L. Lovely.

Really cool sharing your perspective!

It's some kind of philodendron. I have one in my bathroom...low light, some light, sporadic water, it's happy.

With an outdoor view as such..I'd never consider work a 4-letter word~..thanks for sharing your 'Living' with us!

Margene, it makes me so happy to see your work space! I love that I can picture you there now. Great idea for L.

Thanks Margene! I love learning more about my friends' everyday lives.

Some businesses spend big bucks to buy a picture for their wall that is as pretty as your view.

Thanks for "taking us to work with you".

You're so tidy. My desk is covered and tacky looking. OK. I'll show you, soon. I love your view. Mountains. How cool. My view is sky and it's lovely. Still, the mountains. How calming. Neat "L". Have a fabulous weekend, grrl.

You might be able to get to the dusty tree by putting some old panty hose over the end of a vacuum cleaner hose and reaching across. (people who are allergic to dust learn these tricks). As someone who doesn't do well with indoor plants I can add that mother-in-laws tongue would also work well in your space if you should ever desire to add something new. I have had mine for 20+ years and haven't managed to kill it yet. Pretty amazing ;)

Great L! Nice to see "behind the scenes." :) You should try streaming thecurrent.org sometime - their morning show (The Morning Show) is great. It's from 5 am - 9 am, CT. I'm also very fond of the weekday newsbreaks at about 4:20 and 5:20 pm CT. Plus the music, of course. :)

Love the view - thanks!

Thanks for sharing! Your office space looks pleasant and that view....so beautiful!

I LOVE my Sigg...you can always find it on my desk too :-).

I used to work in an office that had a monstrous fake ficus. The owner of the store it came from was a friend of the big cheese. He told us to mist it thoroughly with Windex periodically and as it dripped off so went the dust and debris. We did put newspaper underneath it to catch the drips. Once a year or so was all it needed and it looked great. I liked the 'take the readers to work' theme, too.

Now I can picture you at work when we chat! Thank you!

That's wonderful!! What a great view.

Wow! What a view you have. I hope you don't take that for granted. Some of us look directly into another faceless building across a narrow alley or train tracks. Sunshine and mountains make for a mini-vacation every time you look outside your window.

I too would get lost in that view, Margene. Still all that snow in June?

As far as the tree of dust and death -- there was one of those in one of my teacher's lounges. Yuck. What about canned air to clean it? At least then the dust would land somewhere you could get to it...

Very different, but appropriate, L!

That is an incredibly tidy desk.

Excellent and creative L. I wish I'd thought of it! Maybe U will be for UVM or something. :)

That's a nice looking work place with an incredibly gorgeous view!

That's one heck of a view from work - I don't think I'd ever get tired of it.

How lucky are you to have such great views!

What a great idea for the letter "L"! Nice to see inside the other part of your daily life:) Have a wonderful summer weekend.

I think I'd stare at the mountains all day! Or be tempted to do so!

That was a great L. I am very jealous of your mountain views. I have no views of mountains or anything from my office.

What a view you have!... Even at work, you get to gaze at the mountains. :-)

Is there emergency knitting in one of the desk drawers?

Thanks for a peek into your daily workplace! I don't like those big houseplants either. The dusting is a nightmare.

Inform your mangagement that a new flat-screen monitor will pay for itself with energy savings in no time at all. It is true (but the time thing takes a little longer than "no time").

Thanks for the view of your work!

Lots nicer than mine. Probably all in all a better view, too. I have some odd plant, as well, and it's managed to thrive for a year now. Thanks for showing us around.

Nice try, but we all know that what you really do is troll the internets all day, reading blogs and starting up broo-ha-has on Ravelry. Make a living. Right. ;)

very cool!!

I love this post. So fun to see where you spend your work time.

Oh my gosh - your desk is way too neat!!!

You desk is so neat - puts mine to shame. But I do have the exact same Sigg bottle as you, you just can't see mine on my desk for all the paperwork and junk!

This was a great choice for the letter L. I enjoyed seeing where you work. Hope the haze clears off soon.

I love the Monkey Paw. Thanks for the peak at your work. It's been fun to get to know you better through your blog since I never come to SnB. I hope to change that as my life settles down in the next six months or so. (I am aware that may be wishful thinking, but it can't hurt to hope.)

great L post.
So nice to see where you work, and your view as well.

What a great idea - that was fun. Thanks. I don't have a view from my desk and I'm not doing an alphabet, but I'm thinking about how to blog the book explosion that seems to be my desk. Today would have been the day, after a weeks absence.

Nice work space. The view is lovely, despite the smog. We've been Code Red here the past few days. Too bad I have to keep breathing it in anyway.
