Are you sure this is the same guy and what prompted moustache shaving in the winter? At our house in winter, beards are grown to match moustaches & keep faces warm. Wishing you speedy moustache growth!

midlife crisis?
Posted by:Tan | January 03, 2008 at 04:38 AM
Oh, wow!
Posted by:Kathy | January 03, 2008 at 05:02 AM
Hahahaha!!!! The good thing about moustaches...they grow back :-)
Posted by:Kim | January 03, 2008 at 05:16 AM
He's been threatening this for a while now, hasn't he? How weird it must be for you. I've never seen Dale clean-shaven and I can't even imagine it!
Posted by:Carole | January 03, 2008 at 05:23 AM
At least mine doesn't ever even talk about doing that. My dad used to regularly and it could feel ver disorienting and disconcerting. They look so different.
Posted by:KarenJoSeattle | January 03, 2008 at 05:38 AM
That's a big change! He must look like a completely different person.
Posted by:Ruth | January 03, 2008 at 05:40 AM
Get over it! You've still got the rest of him and he looks cute and kissable either way, if you don't mind my saying so.
Posted by:Paula | January 03, 2008 at 05:53 AM
I'm kind of with Paula! But I do feel bad for you if it was a shock. Just keep kissing him so much that you can't "see" what's missing!
Posted by:deb | January 03, 2008 at 06:10 AM
Imposter!!
Posted by:Chris | January 03, 2008 at 06:23 AM
Barry shaved his beard less than a month ago.
It's back already.
Posted by:susan | January 03, 2008 at 06:33 AM
On some weird whim Caleb shaved his beard a couple of months ago. And seriously? He looked like an adolescent and I couldn't stand to kiss him! I made him promise to grow it back and never shave the goatee again.
Posted by:Miriam | January 03, 2008 at 06:38 AM
He'll miss the warmth (and your kisses, too). It will be back soon, I'll bet. :)

YIKES.
Posted by:Laurie | January 03, 2008 at 06:48 AM
oh; i hate when that happens. my guy keeps a little M shaped 'stash most of the time.
Posted by:marie in florida | January 03, 2008 at 06:56 AM
When Terry had dark hair, he once grew a moustache. When he shaved it no one noticed, b'cause he looked so weird WITH it! He then grew the full beard and 'stach, and I wasn't happy when he went to just the beard....he looks, well, AMISH! (Especially in jeans and suspenders with a straw hat out on the tractor....) I guess men have the same "cut or grow" rights that women have! But, sheesh, Smith, wait till spring!
Posted by:Marcia Cooke | January 03, 2008 at 07:07 AM
I've lived through this experience. It grows back. ;-)
Posted by:Jan | January 03, 2008 at 07:21 AM
How weird that must be for you. Let's hope it grows back fast.
Posted by:Hillary | January 03, 2008 at 07:35 AM
I remember the first time G shaved his head. I totally encouraged it, but once he did it I was slightly horrified. Now I LOVE it.
I've always wanted him to grow a beard - but he hates it.
I hope you get used to it soon, or he grows it back. Did he not consult you on it? I would've FREAKED if he just walked in and surprised me like that! Hugs, my friend. Guys are so goofy.
Posted by:Cara | January 03, 2008 at 07:38 AM
Well, there is not a lot a guy can change about their appearance.
I am sure you will get used to it but....it will take time.
Posted by:Sarah HB | January 03, 2008 at 07:43 AM
OMG, Smith is moulting!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Posted by:CindyCindy | January 03, 2008 at 07:51 AM
Oh dear...it's pretty awful when there is such a radical change. Is he insisting that it will never come back or did he feel the need for a bit of change? And maybe you'll get used to it and even like it. Remember to practice non-attachment.
Posted by:Teri S. | January 03, 2008 at 07:52 AM
I reacted the same way when Hubby shaved off his goatee, which is back now! Just remember it's hair and it'll grow back, especially if you hide his razors!
Posted by:Robin in VA | January 03, 2008 at 07:54 AM
I feel the same way when Kevin shaves his beard. Sob! He's under orders not to touch it other than to trim. Smith's mustache will grow back.
Posted by:Nathania | January 03, 2008 at 08:01 AM
Wow! What a startling change! Is Moxie growling at him? Hopefully he'll grow it back.
Posted by:Manise | January 03, 2008 at 08:06 AM
Such a shock. When we were early married Pete climbed poles for the telephone company and in the winter would grow a beard for warmth. Gillian was about two and after having it for months he shaved it and scared the hell out of her. She wouldn't look at him or go near him, so strange was it for her to hear his voice coming out of a strangers face. Smith will probably miss is and grow it back, Pete hasn't, thank goodness. Although, we have a local weather man who had a mustache for years, forever as far as I knew and about five or six years ago he went away for a while and came back without it. I'm still not used to it.
Posted by:Teresa C | January 03, 2008 at 08:16 AM
Did he at least warn you?
Posted by:Wool Winder | January 03, 2008 at 08:18 AM
Maybe he'll grow it back... with a goatee.
; )
My DH grew a full beard & mustache once -- very unusual -- and then shaved it off in stages, taking pictures at each "stage." It was HILARIOUS -- he looked like a lunatic in one, a "bandido" in another, etc. Heh, that was over 20 years ago and it still makes me smile real big.

My husband has to save off his beard for the upcoming opera. Nothing like seeing the image of your father-in-law walk in the front door after your cute-bearded-husband shaves.
They *do* grow back.

Once, John shaved his moustache but NOT his beard. The effect was rather disturbing, to say the least. I was not pleased, and the moustache soon returned. He periodically asks me "should I shave?" and I always answer "NO you should not!" It'll grow back quickly, though. It takes some getting used to, doesn't it?

I'm not a fan of mustaches in general, so I think I prefer the exposed upper lip. But I'm sorry for your loss! ;-)
Posted by:Beth S. | January 03, 2008 at 08:32 AM
Hey, accidents happen. Trust me, this I know. Shaving/trimming is a very precise thing. A little snip here, a little trim there. One slip, and it's time to shave and start over.
Posted by:Dave Daniels | January 03, 2008 at 08:35 AM
Those boyz. Always up to something.
Posted by:claudia | January 03, 2008 at 08:46 AM
My husband shaved his this summer and I had never in 18 years seen his bare nekkid face. Now I prefer him that way. He definitely looks younger.
Posted by:Mary Lou | January 03, 2008 at 08:47 AM
::gasp:: I was shocked and then I began to wonder... Did you start to run out of things for 365 and pay him to shave it? (just kidding, but hopefully it got a laugh)
Posted by:Stacey | January 03, 2008 at 08:48 AM
Still handsome, though.
Posted by:Heather Joins The Round | January 03, 2008 at 08:49 AM
If you don't want him any more, I'll take him off your hands.
Posted by:lynn | January 03, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Whatever possessed him??? Doesn't he know he's supposed to be GROWING hair on his face in the wintertime? Nooooooo! is right!
Posted by:elizabeth | January 03, 2008 at 09:10 AM
I like it! At least you noticed. When my husband shaved his, it took me a day to realize!
Posted by:Bridget | January 03, 2008 at 09:25 AM
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!
Posted by:Cheryl S. | January 03, 2008 at 09:33 AM
hide all the shavers or razors or whatever you call them! but he does look kinda cute, from what i can see....
Posted by:debbie | January 03, 2008 at 09:57 AM
What was his impetus?
Posted by:Anne | January 03, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Yeah, Jeff knows such an act will elicit screams of horror from me and the girls. I love his goatee. Take heart, it will grow back, especially if you share with Smith the feedback of the fabulous females of the internet... Hope you are feeling better.
Posted by:Lark | January 03, 2008 at 10:11 AM
I was wondering when you posted the wonderful young picture of you two, if you had ever seen his lip?
Posted by:Margaret | January 03, 2008 at 10:24 AM
My ex shaved his mustache and beard off one time and then said he looked like a poster child for condoms. Hopefully he will take your great sadness into account and quickly grow it back.
Posted by:Leah | January 03, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Years ago I talked my hubby into finally growning a goatee and he's had it ever since. I think he would look so goofy now if he shaved it off. I keep trying to convince him to grow a partial beard to go with it....kind of like Riker in Star Trek The Next Generation. He's not going for it yet...but someday I'll wear him down LOL.
It'll grow back so fast you'll hardly remember it was gone.

My dad has only been without a mustache twice in my life, the first time I was 9 and burst out laughing when he came out of the bathroom, I feel terrible about it now, but it was funny then :).
The second time I told him he looked like his younger brother (this was when I was 25ish? much smarter in the etiquette game), much different.
Posted by:Meadow | January 03, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Ah, hate it when they do that. I had a boyfriend once who cut off 10 inches of hair (yes, you read that right, and quite a shock I got!) and my dad scared the heck out of me in college by answering the door *without* the full-bear-and-moustache he'd had since before I was born.
Luckily, hair grows... and men tend to listen when a woman laments and complains...
Posted by:loribird | January 03, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Haha...I am sorry to laugh at your pain. But that post was too darn funny.
Posted by:Kara | January 03, 2008 at 11:11 AM
I will gladly try and persuade My Guy to send Smith his goatee, if you'd like.
