From the Ridiculous to the Sublime!
Fini! And not a moment too soon. The process of knitting this sock was not as enjoyable as it should have been. That means only one thing...it wasn't the yarn, it wasn't the pattern, it was ME. It's unexplainable, truthfully, as to why this was so. It involved the usual 5 sticks, a string (I made myself), and a pattern that looked great. It was a pattern, an entire process, I just couldn't get into and one that didn't improve over time....the looong time it took to knit this pair of socks. Only by working on getting rid of the negative, concentrating, meditating on what was good, did I get through the project. Slogging WAS the process, as it turned out, and that's as it should be. Zen is always as it should be, its all perfect. It was a moment of ridiculousness which made what follows even better. Without the 'ugly' there would be no beautiful.
Enter....Sublime (albeit in a ridiculous situation)...
Ceilidh Lace Socks, by Anne, from her own Wooly Wonka Fibers, in a beautiful, soft, shinny and luxurious bamboo superwash merino, colorway Seashells, sitting delicately on top of a big black tire. Knitting this sock has been heavenly...the process is easy, perfect and delightful. Ceilidh was a nice companion as I sat waiting for a flat tire to be repaired (never leave home without your knitting!). The nearby tires were the only thing on hand to use as a back drop for a picture and the were a nice foil for the beauty of the yarn. Since it took an hour and half for the repair I knew the sun would be long gone by the time I made it home.
The gods of all blogging my be conspiring against me for NaBloPoMo...work has exploded and I'm out every night this week (mostly fun). I'll be doing my best to keep up with daily posts and, hopefully they won't be pictureless!

It must feel wonderful to have those socks finished! Love the new ones, too. And you know I never leave home without my knitting!

Shocking! You finished them ;-). They look comfortable. And the lace socks- squishy soft eh? I have some of Anne's roving in the same colorway.

Aren't we lucky we have the knitting. You might have been shopping during that wait if you didn't have wonderful yarn to play with.

So glad you carried on and finished the Shock Wave - they're lovely! What a good application for your own yarn!
A question: the pattern says they are stretchy. Are you pleased with the fit? How do they fit you, compared to other socks you have knit at this stitch count?

The socks came out great! I have a couple of projects on the needles that I feel that way about. I know I will love the finished project so I muddle through.

That's my biggest fear of knitting with my own handspun, the UNKNOWN. What if I don't like it? What of the angst? Of course, your socks look wonderful, and as colorful as a spring garden.

Black is always a good photo backdrop. The texture is an added plus :)
Those new socks look nice and shiny. I like the old ones, and am scratching my head about what made them an ordeal. Sometimes patterns are like that.

They're finished!!! And they look great!!! The question now is will you be able to enjoy wearing them?

At least now you have the satisfaction of having finished them - they didn't defeat you!

I am glad you are happier with your next sock, though the results are very pretty... and it was a very zen experience. Glad to see you never stop learning:)

Congratulations on finishing the socks. I hope the wearing of them is more enjoyable than the knitting was.

I personally love your Strawberry Fields socks. They are beautiful. But then, so are your new ones. As for pictureless blogging, don't sweat it.
Posted by: CindyCindy | November 13, 2007 at 08:22 AM
They really are beautiful, even if you didn't enjoy the process. :)

Beautiful result of an ugly and painful (from the sound of it) process. Like Tan's post of yesterday, the yin of work allows the yang of pleasure in knitting. Sigh. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world. Blue skies!

Now if you find yourself still unable to love your strawberry fields, I could give them a good foster home . .. Soooo pretty! Bravo!

I'm glad you stuck with them -- they look great!

Whatever the reason for your displeasure with those socks, they are lovely and they are finished! Congratulations!

You should live blog from SnB tonight. Kill two birds with one stone.

lovely.
sorry 'bout the flat tire - at least you had your knitting with you! I dyed up a tiny amount of that bamboo/merino sock yarn myself last July, and can't wait to knit with it. The hand is wonderful on it.

Torturous as the process was, the socks are lovely!
Posted by: Chris | November 13, 2007 at 09:43 AM
So, did anyone at Costco ask you what you were doing, photographing a sock on a tire?
Posted by: elizabeth | November 13, 2007 at 09:44 AM
But they did come out beautifully!

Those socks are beautiful! And I agree with Susan. Live blogging! :)

It makes you wonder what non-knitters do while waiting for things like tires to be repaired. How do they entertain their hands?
The socks look great. Congrats on your stick-to-it-ive-ness.

Well, Roxie beat me to it, but if you really feel you need to get that negative energy out of your sock drawer... :)
Congratulations on seeing the process through!

How did you manage to post four times since the last time I looked?... ;-)
I think the socks were worth the effort. They look lovely! I particularly like the pink stripes on the toe of the right (your right) sock. ;-)

I've always loved your Strawberry Fields socks--even in the pre-sock just spun yarn stage. I'm glad you finished them and I really hope you can enjoy wearing them.
Anne's bamboo sock yarn is one of my very favorites. I'm knitting my second pair of socks from it (a birthday present for my mom) right now.

Nice socks and yarn in spite of everything.

I love the yarn on the tire. Heh. Posts without pictures can be ok, too. Just keep it up! You know you can do it!!! :P

I'm glad you finished those socks. At least now they are done. Yay!!

The socks are so pretty. It is such a shame that they weren't a pleasant experience.

I have had sock experiences like that. Some patterns I will not make again. The Ceilidh Lace are pretty-I had to go buy the pattern. Both are lovely.
