October - Ten of a Dozen - Walk With Me Wednesday Edition

Walkinginthewoodsofwheelerfarm

Goingforawalkathtearm There are many reasons why October is my favorite month, including weather that is temperate, unsettled, interesting, always beautiful and the rich colors, hidden textures and the feral smell of the earth....ah, talk a deep breath.

Leavesadornedbysunlight We slowly walk behind Moxie as he needs to stop and smell all the new, unusual smells of the season.  The leaves have just started to change, but golden cottonwood leaves dot the lawn, large marigolds glow, still untouched by frost, and warm-hued, mutli-colored leaves on waning vines dance between bare branches.  The dappled sunlight has a golden glow as it adorns the leaves.

Hidden in a thicket we find an abandon nest, a branch covered with a mossy green, and the last of the wildflowers.

As we arrive home from our leisurely, delightful afternoon walk, we see our mountain has come alive with color...it's quite a view.

Fall is such a beautiful time of year.  If only its golden glow would last a little longer...sigh.

I've listed my favorite things about October:

  • Long shadows and golden light
  • Mild days, cool nights
  • Baseball playoffs
  • The the clear blue sky as blank canvas for clouds formations
  • A wool shawl is a perfect outdoor companion
  • Walking through leaves and hearing the rustling, crunching sounds they make
  • Socks can be perfect one day and sandals the next
  • The colors are rich, warm, and earthy
  • It's time to wear warm wool sweaters!

Do you have something you'd like to add?  What are your favorite things about fall?

Comments

The first thing that came to my mind was "sweater weather" and then I saw that it was the last thing on your list.
I would also add pumpkins.

Things I love about October? Eating homemade soup, Rhinebeck, and Halloween decorations!

Corduroy jackets! Blue jeans! Dansko professional clogs! Long sleeve tshirts under short sleeve tshirts! Scarves! Fun hats! No humidity! The way even if it's 78 degrees, it's still cool because of all the breezes and lack of oppressive humidity!

I love October!

In the "it's all about me" category, October has both my anniversary and birthday!

-cool, crisp days
-planting bulbs in anticipation of next spring's flowers
-pumpkins
-the colors of my hill
-gardens and fields with their mix of the remains of plants gone by and tenatious flowers still blooming
-the first fire in the fireplace

October is my favorite month too

Apples!

Mmm....I love the smell of those crunch leaves and even more the smell of the first woodstove fires of the season. I love Halloween and pumpkin decorations. I love Candy Corn and apple pies. I LOVE October too :-)

The exquisitely clear blue sky juxtaposed against the brilliant foliage, a warm face and cool back, cider and pumpkin pie, woodsmoke on the air, snow on the mountain tops. Blue skies!

Usually the sun - not this year so far!

- Rhinebeck
- apples
- pumpkins
- still thinking I have time to make holiday gifts

And, to quote my favorite home-grown poet:

The morns are meeker than they were -
The nuts are getting brown -
The berry's cheek is plumper -
The Rose is out of town -
The maple wears a gayer scarf -
The field - a scarlet gown -
Lest I sh'd seem old fashioned
I'll put a trinket on!

soup and sleeping with the window opened just a bit

We don't get much change here, just the change of the sun's direction, windy, dry and "cooler" nights. The house changes to fall more inside than out. I live vicariously through blogs during the non-summer months. Le sigh...

Halloween and watching my daughter love it as much as I do.

I'm a sucker for "transition" seasons. I love how things change in the Fall. It's like nature's little 'do-over'.

The smell of the leaves, plus an occasional fireplace smell. Rhinebeck. Wearing socks, finally! Elder daughter's birthday in Oct.

This is my favorite month!

Almost all of the above, but add having my two little grandsons come here to do their Halloween trick or treating! We live on a cul-de-sac, while they live on a busy road, so it's safer for them over here. Besides, their dad gets a kick out of showing them off to the neighbors who remember HIM as a little kid in costume!

Time to wear handknit socks and to pull out oversized wooly projects that were too warm for my lap.

What a wonderful "virtual" stroll for us. Thank you. I think everyone else has just about covered all the wonderfulness of October, but I guess my favorite is the changing colors of the trees.

I love the warm days/cool nights, and the trees changing colors. And walking in leaves. I shuffled through a big pile of them on the sidewalk yesterday at lunchtime and thought of you.

Stews, soups, Apple cider. :) Beautiful photos.

I rushed through my October post so fast that I forgot to mention one of my favorites--the World Series, even if my team's not in it. Love all your photos!

Most of my faves have already been listed... getting to wear jeans and eat soup again, apples, pumpkins and squash, the pear harvest, having a fire, and of course the gloriously painted hills around me.

The golden light is definitely one of my favorites, and sweater and wooly sock weather, of course!

Dreyer's Pumpkin Ice Cream! :D

Fresh local apple cider!

Love your photos today! My favorite thing about fall is the colors, but crisper air and a fire in the fireplace work for me, too.

I so love the play of lights and shadows as the days shorten.

I like driving through a swirl of falling leaves.

Better get on the road, actually.

So far, my favorite thing about this fall is seeing pictures of sunny skies on your blog! So. Tired. Of. Clouds. And. Rain.

a big pot of soup and a crusty bread

the change of colors, the first snow on the mountains - all the weather

being able to wear my new 'socks'!

Gorgeous! We don't really have much of a fall at this altitude. It's already snowed and it's getting cold. Although the days are still nice, if a bit brisk.

fresh in-season macoun apples, pumpkins, the way the air smells, halloween decorations, first fires of the year in the fireplace/wood-burnign stove, and my birthday! I love the autumn.

I'm into the foods, too! Apples, butternut/acorn squash, stews and soups. The the clothes! Wool plaid jackets (and feeling professionally dressed again!), knit socks.
Hmmm...cooler air, the smell of woodsmoke in the air as well...
(((hugs)))

I love everything about fall. Light layers weather, homemade soups, an excessive use of the color orange, hot chocolate, and fireplaces. I just love it!

I am "new" to your site... I love knitting too found you through the knitting sites trying to get ideas. I am still unskilled knitter but continue to get better at knitting!... I've listed my favorite Fall things but some of these things goes through-out the winter months too:
Seasonal music...
Putting a Puzzle together on a stormy day.
Smells of Baking in the air and
Slow Cooking Soaps simmering all day.
Seasonal decorations...
My fall knitting beings...
Driving through falling leaves
Taking photos of all the colors of the season!
Curled-up with a good book and Hot Chocolate
Wearing sweaters!
Planting bulbs for next spring
Snuggling with my sweetheart next to a blazing fire in the fireplace
Family Transition... Thanks for your fun post I am a Utah girl too - nesteled in town of Garden City near Bear Lake Utah...

I love the deepening focus, the gathering in, the fact that the serious books and movies come out, the way we turn our thoughts homeward to the heart and the hearth.

I have a friend who believes in revelation by typo - found one in your post today:

"talk a deep breath"

We shallow breathe much of the time, until someone or something reminds us of the proper way to fill up our lungs and replenish our life's blood. Even so does our conversation often rest in shallow waters, drifting freely over the events of the day. Ah, but when we "talk a deep breath," my wise friend, we discover the refreshment we have been lacking, the way to feed our souls.

Thanks for "talking" a deep breath today...

Blessings!

What could I add? You've covered it all so well! :-)

Fall chrysanthemums, maybe. They come in all my favorite colors. :-)

Pumpkins, butternut squash soup, apple cider, and my daughter loves the colors of the leaves: purple, red, green, gold, ...

Wool! Winter knitting! Bringing out my sweaters! Rhinebeck (sorry). Red wine weather. Planning skiing. Weather that doesn't make me wilt.

Ditto to apples!

Apple picking, stacking wood for winter fires, the cool crisp air, trees that are on fire with color, pulling out the wool sweaters and socks, bundling under the down comforter.

Sweater weather and sweater knitting! The cool, crisp wind of fall weather and warm, wooly socks! Yay!

Leaves. The smell of fall....whatever that is, but there is one.

Wearing my hand knit socks ;o))

...and making beef stew and fresh bread on chilly rainy days (guess what's for dinner tomorrow night?) :o)

October is good. Brach's Autumn Mix. My Birthday. The calm before the holiday season.

cooking in my kitchen again.
halloween!
halloween!
did i say halloween?

Fresh made cider and donuts at a Michigan orchard. And I love the colors of your mountains!
