Half a Pair Trio
What's got into me? Has this ever happened? Three, that's three socks that have no mates. What we have here is not second sock syndrome...its delusions of grandeur! Too many fun socks to knit, so little time (this seems to be my mantra for so many things lately). The Neapolitan Sock (Trekking yarn) has been a kick to knit. Whenever I'm working on it in public (usually I'm knitting with other knitters) everyone has to comment on what fun it is and how it looks like ice cream or candy. It's very eye catching and just plain fun. Last week I told you about finishing the first Shockwave out of my handspun and today I must tell you about my love for Ruby. Ruby My Dear aka Thelonious is the apple of my eye.
Ruby has so many wonderful qualities from the tip of her toe to the top of her cuff. First let's look at thesubtle shading of reds in her yarn. Judy did a smashing job of dyeing a red so rich and true with deeper reds in the undertones. It really is exceptional. Smith proclaims often how much he loves the color.
Not only do I love the color (and the texture) of the yarn...I love the pattern and the way the design travels around the leg and down the foot. This sock has been pure entertainment to knit, even if I do need to refer to the chart often. The lace pattern starts in four places on the cuff and travels diagonally down the leg, intersecting and then crossing over, to travel down the foot. It's really ingenious the way CookieA adds and subtracts rib stitches to create the movement.
The ribbing is constant, yet changing, and helps to insure the sock will fit (pattern is in three sizes). It's so cool to see the ribbing come and go, end and begin, as the lace panel works down the sock. If you look at the front of the leg and the top of the foot you'll see the ribbing and lace fit well together. Don't you love it? I do!
I do believe the second Ruby will be knit before any other sock as I do so love this pattern and the yarn. However, I have been thinking it's time for Smith's next pair of socks and tomorrow I should pick another yarn from my SCFO. Hmmmm, whatever will I do?

Ruby is truly a beauty to behold! The other socks are nice too, but Ruby ( pardon me for a moment) blows my socks off!! ;-)

Beautiful socks and Ruby is to just eye catching!

All very pretty socks! I can see how hard it would be to stick with one pair!
Posted by: Alison | July 31, 2007 at 05:54 AM
Oh, wow, your Ruby Thelonious is absolutely stunning! I know I wouldn't be able to finish anything else until I finished that pair.

Your Thelonious is inspiring! I have the pattern in stash, and just inventoried my sock yarns (*waves fan at self*).
I was actually thinking of purposefully starting new sock(s) after one was done, so that when I get to the second, I'm re-energized rather than impatient. Worth the experiment?

Oh, that Ruby is a beauty! I've had Thelonious on my list for quite awhile. Yours inspires me to cast on right away. Your color choice is fantastic.

It's still the season of naked toes, so you have plenty of time! :) They all look wonderful.
Posted by: Stacey | July 31, 2007 at 06:50 AM
That sock is gorgeous, what a pattern. I like the way the patterning simplifies as it travels down the foot. Looks beautiful and comfortable.

Thanks for showing the closeups of Ruby....it's an ingenious design and I can see why it has your attention at the moment!

Ruby is beautiful. I bought that pattern a while ago and I think it's time I start. I've got some of Judy's yarn, too, but I'm thinking I'll use the Louet Gems. I'll bring my Trekking Ice Cream socks in September and we can wear them together!
Posted by: Carole | July 31, 2007 at 07:05 AM
But what if you pick a girly sock yarn? Aren't they all wrapped up? Or can you sneak a look?
Posted by: Kathleen | July 31, 2007 at 07:07 AM
Ruby is indeed a gem!
Posted by: Chris | July 31, 2007 at 07:32 AM
Thelonius is on my to-do list and now I'm thiking that maybe it woud make good trip knitting. Ruby is gorgeous!
Posted by: Hillary | July 31, 2007 at 07:40 AM
It sounds to me as if Smith likes your Rubies. would they fit him? Oh, c'mon! Who's gonna see that he's wearing lace? I am mad for your Strawberry Fields!
Posted by: Roxie | July 31, 2007 at 07:50 AM
I can understand your dilemma with the trio. But yes, finish Ruby first! She's gorgeous.
Posted by: Cheryl | July 31, 2007 at 07:53 AM
Ohhhh, that Ruby is enough to (almost) get me to knitting another pair of socks for myself. :)

Ruby is a beauty!

Easy to see why you love them so much! They're gorgeous!
Posted by: Carol | July 31, 2007 at 08:11 AM
Let me put this one out there for you: WHY do socks HAVE to match? Why can't people wear two different hand knit socks? I think we need to start a new fashion trend.

I love your Thelonious!
Posted by: Nonnahs | July 31, 2007 at 08:42 AM
All those lovely single socks sure need a male companion! You make me want to knit this Ruby Thelonious too!
Posted by: Rachel | July 31, 2007 at 08:47 AM
You do not have SSS(second sock syndrome). Rather you are celebrating the "Summer of Single Socks" If you finished the socks now could you wear them?
Love Thelonius, that's near the top of my queue.
Posted by: kim | July 31, 2007 at 08:50 AM
I'm chuckling, because I knit socks this way - three or four different singles, then I go back and make all the mates :-) (truly I do)
Love that Ruby. wow. Cookie A. is a total sock designing genius!

I'm so glad to know that I'm not alone!
Posted by: elizabeth | July 31, 2007 at 09:08 AM
They are all so lovely.
Ruby is a true jem.

Margene, you have such a knack for picking socks that call to me! Ruby/Thelonius looks wonderful, and I've already caught myself pondering my sock yarn stash. I HAVE to finish a couple pairs before I start anything new!
Posted by: Judy H. | July 31, 2007 at 10:04 AM
What a unique pattern! You really have a knack for creating beautiful socks!
Posted by: Pat K | July 31, 2007 at 10:21 AM
ha, three singleton socks! that's where i left off sock making two summers ago. i have caught them up this summer; now that i've returned to a sit down job. still hunting that trekking...

What a delightful dilemma to have. :-)
Posted by: Beth S. | July 31, 2007 at 10:44 AM
Wow, I love those Thelonious socks! I love how the lace comes down to a point at the toe.
Posted by: Kim | July 31, 2007 at 10:51 AM
Well clearly there's some sort of SSS outbreak going around. Hope I didn't pass it on to you!
Posted by: Beth | July 31, 2007 at 11:27 AM
Very lovely and shapely--and a perfect color for you!
Posted by: Sneaksleep | July 31, 2007 at 12:33 PM
You know, just because your socks are single doesn't make them any less valid members of society. Sure, in time, they may find a mate, but they might quite like meals-for-one and evenings alone in front of the TV. [tongue in cheek throughout]
Posted by: AmyP | July 31, 2007 at 12:39 PM
You know which two I love, right?
Totally fab threesome!
Posted by: Cookie | July 31, 2007 at 12:50 PM
They are all so pretty. Starting that second sock can be so hard when you want to try all the pretty patterns.
Posted by: CindyCindy | July 31, 2007 at 02:02 PM
Thelonius is absolutely stunning! Yes, that will be my first sock of the autumn when the girls go back to school. I love the ruby reds!
Posted by: Kim | July 31, 2007 at 03:56 PM
You can mix and match a pair! They are all wonderful!
xo
Posted by: sandy | July 31, 2007 at 06:51 PM
Ruby is really beautiful, though it is sounding like you might have four singles before a pair appears.
Posted by: Birdsong | July 31, 2007 at 06:53 PM
I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one plagued with "SSS". They're all beauties. I just gave my boss a pair of the exact socks on the left. And, I finished my second "Monkey". Just bought some Tofutsies, and I started some "Jaywalkers" using Bare Sheep handspun. Of course, there's the infamous second sock for the boyfriend, and my friend Amy will kill me if I don't finish her 2nd Pedicure sock. Oops, I think I hear eBay calling me. Happy knitting!

That is living dangerously, sock-wise.
;-)

Thelonius is gorgeous in the Ruby! I love all the socks though.
Posted by: Jennifer | July 31, 2007 at 08:05 PM
All three socks are lovely, and Theo is very cool. I love the yarn.
I can't seem to finish a pair of socks. There's just too many cool patterns and yarns out there, and I'm having trouble with focus.
Posted by: Vera | July 31, 2007 at 09:36 PM
slurp & slobber!
Posted by: minnie | July 31, 2007 at 09:50 PM
I love your Thelonious too. With so many sock patterns to knit I don't plan too many repeats but I WILL knit a second (third, fourth?) Thelonious myself!
Since Smith loves the red so much I think you should knit hime some manly red socks. Here's a suggestion...Vinnland in some Vino Veritas Smooshy! Not really red but manly and the pattern is awesome! ( I love that Smooshy in Cloud Jungle or Blue Lagoon if he's not up for red socks ...yet!)

I agree - there are so many wonderful sock yarns and patterns - it's hard to choose. Ruby is indeed gorgeous - I've been trying to hold off buying more patterns. I still like the ideas of Dobby from Harry Potter - wearing two different socks. It would come in handy.
Posted by: Lisa | August 01, 2007 at 05:09 AM
I remember you warning me about starting a new pair when I'd only finished one. . .the temptation is so hard to resist, though, where there are so many beautiful patterns. I LOVE that Thelonius!
Posted by: Alarming Female | August 03, 2007 at 10:43 AM
Yup, I feel the same way. Ready to cast on about 2 or 3 more pairs of socks! Craziness. Yours look great too. I really love Ruby, how can you not? What colorway is it that you're using? Although you might not want to tell me because I'll probably email Judy to order it!!;-) All of those single mates look great.
