A Western Grrl
It was the perfect winter weekend...cold, clear, crisp, white mountains with blue, blue skies. What's not to love about a weekend that looks like this?
Over 116" of snow has fallen at Snowbird since February 10th and conditions for skiing could not be better. If you wonder what powder skiing is like you can check the slide show here and a video here. Even if you're not a skier it is a great show of natures excellence and you'll appreciate the unique quality and beauty of Utah's snow. If you are a skier, I can't be held responsible for the damage you'll do to the keyboard as you drool all over it. The mountains are still pure white and the sky is clear blue, as you can see in the picture from Moxie's post.
As a grrl from the West, and as a knitter, I will not settle for the mundane red kerchief. Wearing a scarf, bandanna, or kerchief around the neck is a good way to keep a chill away, to keep the cold air off the nape, and yet, have a little western chic at the same time (okay, stop rolling your eyes). I can't help but be a little proud to wear this nice little scarf that seems to go well with everything from a denim jacket to a simple shirt for work. There may be more small scarfs in my future.

Thanks to Vicki and Carole we enjoyed a couple of very nice meals. I am ALL about easy and THE potatoes were heavenly! Carole's Roast Beef Soup is very easy too and it's extra yummy. Smith was happy to help and so please to enjoy the fruits of our labors. Now I'm no MFS, but even I can cook up dishes this easy.
You have all become so important to me (us, really) and your comments on Thursday's and Friday's posts have been wonderful to read. I am so touched and honored to have you as my friends and appreicate your trust, kindness and help. I'm feeling back to 'normal' (for what that is worth) and I'm so happy to have that behind me. I do hope to be blogging for a long time to come.
Jacquie found out that Kaffe Fassett will be coming to SLC. We are very excited and honored as it seems we will be his only American stop on this tour!
I'm also excited to be meeting up with Mz. Wool Windings this afternoon at Three Wishes. I predict a good time.

The Estonian Lace scarf is beautiful with your handspun and as usual, your backdrop is breathtaking!

Beautiful scarf! Congratulations on a completed project with your handspun. And I'll have to check out the recipes later. So glad to hear that you are feeling better.

What a lovely little scarf! I bet if feels even better than it looks. And WHAT A VIEW! I'm glad that your inversion days are over for now!
Posted by: jackie | March 05, 2007 at 04:30 AM
You look good in Estonian lace.
I'm NOT NOT NOT going to look at the videos.

The scarf is terrific and the photo shoot a success! Glad the soup was yummy.
Posted by: Carole | March 05, 2007 at 04:58 AM
The scarf is a beautiful accessory. No wonder you're so happy about it. I would be, too!
Posted by: colleen | March 05, 2007 at 05:05 AM
Beautiful scarf -- tellement chic! (I'm not rolling my eyes at all.) I'm glad you're extroverted again.
Posted by: Lucia | March 05, 2007 at 05:14 AM
I love the scarf. I didn't know that Piecework has knitting in it again. I'll have to hunt that back issue. Your spinning is so perfect!
Posted by: Joan | March 05, 2007 at 05:17 AM
Gorgeous - and spindlespun, too. I'm inspired. How many ounces of the roving did it take? I have some 4 oz bumps that I've been gifted, and they're all beautiful, but I keep thinking they're not going to spin up to much yardage. As a 4-month-old spinner I suck at guesstimating. This looks like a small enough project that I might be able to turn them into wearable pretties. :-)

Your handspun is GORGEOUS!!! So glad you're feeling better.

A little larger than the Estonian Scarf, I wear my Shapely Shawlette(s) ALL THE TIME! I'm all about keeping the neck warm. It's lovely, Margene, and with your own homemade yarn -- extra special.
Hahaha, Nessa Z. wrote that she made the potatoes again, and she likened the delight of smashing to popping bubble wrap. ; ) I'm having leftover soup for lunch today.

Wow, I am so proud of you and your homespun scarf. What an accomplishment! It's lovely and the color is perfect.

the scarf is really cute.
Posted by: maryse | March 05, 2007 at 06:23 AM
Love the color!
And you spun the yarn yourself, even better!
Posted by: Sarah HB | March 05, 2007 at 06:33 AM
That scarf is perfect....now I know what to do with some of my small amounts of handspun! Glad you're feeling more Margenish, too...you just have to stick around!

Margene, You Estonian lace scarf is gorgeous! Doncha' just love that pattern?
Posted by: Kate/Massachusetts | March 05, 2007 at 06:45 AM
Beautiful scarf. That's really something, lace with your own handspun! That small size is sometimes more wearable than a large shawl - I've been living in my Swallowtail. The nice simple pattern looks like it would be great with small amounts of variegated yarn too.

The mini-triangle scarf is wonderful and so very versatile, as I have found with my FBS. Have you tried wearing it with the point in the front? That's the way I most often wear mine, and then bring the ties back to the front, too. Mine might be just that much bigger than yours, to make that possible. But anyway, your handspun (spindle-spun, no less!) scarf is just beautiful!
P.S. Western chic is awesome -- no eye-rolling here! I love cowboy boots, too!
Posted by: Norma | March 05, 2007 at 06:54 AM
That's really pretty!
Posted by: scout | March 05, 2007 at 07:08 AM
You just blow me away! Spindlespun so fine and even! You, my dear, are a notable spinster! What an inspiring scarf!
Posted by: Roxie | March 05, 2007 at 07:18 AM
Wowza! No eye-rolling here at all. That is indeed quite chic, the color is magnifique, and the fact that it's made from your handspun? Damn. You should be extremely proud.

I like the scarf.
Posted by: trek | March 05, 2007 at 07:40 AM
Beautiful!! And I'm talking about both the scarf and the snow. We didn't get to ski this year and I just can't even bring myself to look at the picts or video. *Sigh*
The scarf is really amazing. Wonderful spinning and knitting. And do I really need to say how much I love the color :-)
Posted by: Alison | March 05, 2007 at 07:41 AM
you have a great hair cut too. it suits you well.
for some reason that simple scarf eluded me, i just wasn't able to "get" the pattern. you're making me want to try again.
btw, when i open my favorites file; my cursor is right on top of my link to your bloggety goodness and susan's is right underneith yours.

2 ply fingering? WOW! I'd like to get one ply fingering. ;) The scarf is as beautiful as it promised to be. Another great finish!

Great job on the scarf and the yarn. I love it!
Where did the sun go? I'm beginning to think I'm a jinx on the weather. See you later today!

I love your pics. DD lived in WY for about 3 years, and i went out to visit. Saw the Rockies from the WY side, and later on from CO side, esp. the trip to Steamboat Springs. Purty rocks, that's for sure.
Gorgeous scarf!
Posted by: ruth | March 05, 2007 at 08:35 AM
Gosh, look at all that snow. I'm so used to sking on ice, I'm not sure that I know how to ski all that powder.
Lookin' good Margene!
Posted by: claudia | March 05, 2007 at 08:45 AM
Ooo, Margene, the scarf is beautiful. May I get a copy of that pattern?
And ... the video and slideshow made my little powder hound heart go pitty-pat!

Your Estonian Scarf is lovely! I particularly like the colors!
I've never skied. I don't even know if I spelled it right. But the scenery is gorgeous!

Have to check my Pieceworks issues and see if I have that one...that's one gorgeous scarf! Love the color!
Hmm...I've been craving potatoes, too - baked, tho'.
(((hugs)))

The scarf is gorgeous! I couldn't believe it when I looked at the notes and saw you had spindle-spun the yarn yourself. You do wonderful work!
Posted by: keri | March 05, 2007 at 09:36 AM
Oh, the scarf turned out so pretty! The purple shade is just right. And it's handspun, too- I'm quite jealous. Wonderful work (as usual!)

Oh the Estonian Scarf is just beautiful!!!! It's perfect for you. Just just - there just aren't words! How awesome to have something that you spun and knit yourself.
And the food. Love me some meat and potatoes for sure! YUM! Have fun with Tracy and give her a squeeze for me. :)

I love that scarf and am so happy to see it finished. I do need to find a back copy of that magazine. The pattern is so pretty and the color is just gorgeous. What a perfect kicky little scarf.

As usual, that color is just wonderful on you! Nice work to finish it up - that must make you feel pretty darn good. :)
Heh - "normal" - heh.

Your pic's do make me crave the snow. I haven't been skiing in years and I am thinking that it is time for a daytrip up to the Sierra's.
Nice scarf too!
Posted by: Cindy | March 05, 2007 at 01:53 PM
Lovely, lovely scarf. And knit from handspun!
Posted by: Jessica | March 05, 2007 at 02:13 PM
Potatoes! One of the things DH and I do while backpacking is daydream about foods we're craving (trail meals leave a lot to be desired). Yesterday was Potato Craving Day, and now here's your post. Thanks for the recipe!

Love how your scarf turned out, and I always appreciate your peaks photos. I miss the peaks now that we're back in Ontario.

The handspun scarf is gorgeous and looks so pretty on you! Glad your feeling better!
Posted by: Kelly | March 05, 2007 at 03:03 PM
What a beautiful scarf!
Thank you for mention how many ounces you spun, Margene. That evil Stacey/Puring Dervish is trying to trick me into learning how to spin and I've been wondering about how far one could get with just a few ounces of fiber.
Posted by: Cookie | March 05, 2007 at 03:12 PM
I love the scarf! You are my hero!
Posted by: Teresa C | March 05, 2007 at 04:40 PM
So sorry that you've been going through such a rough time, but I'm glad to hear that you're starting to feel back to normal. Just don't shave your head, paint 666 across it, and try to hang yourself with the bedsheets while calling yourself the anti-christ, OK? It's already been done.
And how could you not be feeling better after such a beautiful weekend? The mountains were so damn gorgeous! They made me not even mind coming back to the cold after 2 weeks in the tropics.
Your Estonian scarf came out beautifully, and it really looks great with denim. What a great finish to your lovely yarn.
