I Love Lizzy!

There she is, my beautiful Lizzy Kate. She is just adorable, efficient and a more help than one could expect. I do love Lizzy. After spinning two full spindles of Angora Cottage's roving this weekend, I took Lizzy for a spin again. She never disappoints and helped in the creation of the best two-ply yarn I have ever made. In short order (longer than it would take on wheel, but that doesn't matter) I had plied 140+ yds, and left it in the bath, while I headed to the gym. Creating beautiful yarn is certainly a thrill. The inadequacies of my camera are apparent in this photo of the yarn, but hopefully you can see my spinning has improved. I'm humbled that I, me, I can spin, but is it OK to be a little proud, too?

The last two days have been spent spinning and plying a second skein. The plan was to give them to Susan for her 'just past' birthday. Plying took right up until time to leave for SnB, so I didn't have time to bathe the skein or spin up the rest of the roving, which should make another skein about the size of the other two. The two skeins total almost 300 yds so there should be enough for Susan to knit a scarf and wrist warmers or mittens. It's may not be the most perfect yarn (as yet), but I am thrilled to give the best yarn I've made to date to an inspired friend and sensei (of spinning and dyeing). I think she likes it.

How cool is that? Great yarn too.

I am so impressed with the quality of your spinning in such a short period of time and even more impressed that you have done it with spindles! (maybe I should try a lizzy kate)

It's gorgeous, Margene. I'm glad the Lizzy Kate is making this part of the process easier for you. And I love that photo of Susan but it makes me MISS YOU GUYS way too much.

If you're going to be shy about it Margene, I'll just tell you the yarn you made for Susan is STUNNING!!! It's FABULOUS!!! So incredibly beautiful - your spinning is so even and lovely - I'm sure Susan will absolutely love and treasure this gift. Oh the pressure to knit it into something worthy of its loveliness! You're a thoughtful and generous friend. And you're a walking advertisement for the Lizzy Kate. It's going to be at the top of the list for birthday and Christmas presents for me this year for sure!!

what a fantastic spindler you are!

If Susan doesn't like the yarn, I would be glad to adopt it. Be PROUD. woman! You did good work!!Maybe you are channeling an ancestoress who was a notable spinster. (You know that women who were especially deft spinners were so valuable to their families that often their fathers would not permit them to marry and leave. They didn't have to do hard work that would roughen their hands, they got to sit next to the fire in the winter to get the light and keep their hands warm and supple, and they often out-lived all their maried sisters. But, like a prize cow or a fertile plot of land, they were kept in the family.)

I think proud is perfectly wonderful in this case, Margene! You've worked hard and the patience and practice is paying off. I'd be proud too! Congrats, that yarn is lovely!

What a great photo of Susan! The yarn is very, very good, but I do find it interesting to see a friend who resists "deadline" knitting dive into "deadline" spinning! Two more sleeps...

You have made some totally gorgeous yarn Margene- who wouldn't love that as a gift?
And I'm betting that Susan will want some more very very soon :-)
Definately be proud of it - it's fabulous!

You're so productive, I can hardly believe my eyes! I think you have proven once and for all that you don't need a wheel to be a spinner.
Any advice on plying? I have yet to ply anything resembling a balanced yarn, but I bet you have...

You should be proud! It's gorgeous! And it is perfect, as handspun. You don't want it to look like machine spun yarn, right?
Posted by:Leah | August 30, 2006 at 08:49 AM
It's beautiful Margene. I would be proud of making such beautiful yarn too.
Posted by:Karen | August 30, 2006 at 08:52 AM
I love watching your progress! That yarn is beautiful, and I'm sure Susan is honored to receive some of your early yarn.
Spinning is very zen--just doing the same thing, over and over, and having a lovely product in the end. No stitch patterns or decreases to keep track of, nothing.
